Hope gap project. You know, when I was about 5 or so I met Speedy Delivery from the show. I still have his autograph. Anyways, when I met him my father asked him one thing. He asked if Mr. Rogers really was as nice as he was on TV. No person can be that kind, can they? He said that he was just as wonderful in real life and maybe even more so with a smile on his face. Then we can move on to the action and fun stuff of the Gaian's bumbling about Hierarchy space. Revelations Formal First Contact Hierarchy Border world Z979 Log of Hierarchy First Contact Officer Endala I’m writing this down, as per protocol, before physical first contact is made with the fledgling race. We have arrived to Border world Z979, a simple military outpost on the edge of Hierarchy space intended to be a simple early warning system for something from the unknown regions. Inspections verified that it’s sensors were intact, which raises the question of how this species got here. Their ship did not use any known method of FTL. All FTL ships radiate the same energy signature in order to go in and out of FTL travel, and yet they didn’t set it off. It is clearly not a stealth vessel, claiming to be an explorer ship. An explorer ship armed with no less than eight magnetic propulsion projectile cannons, one hundred fourteen smaller rapid fire projectile weapon systems, and one forward facing energy weapon of obscene size. Not to mention the insane size of the ship itself. Fifteen thousand meters in length, angular spear is intimidating, unsettling to look at. And then the fact it has no shielding. They are a truly primitive people. And, as per protocol, we established basic communication, their translators and ours working to get the basic concepts across. We wanted information, specifically language to make communication easy, as well as anything else they were willing to share on their people. Customs, art, anything really to learn about these people. They sent over a crate. I watched as the box flew over to us, propelled, with surprising grace, by little jets of air guiding it to one of our airlocks. In the box we found a cooling unit containing what we assume to be genetic samples, though we were given four samples, two red, two black with silver specs. A dual species coming from a single world? Not unheard of but extremely rare. A smaller crate inside was opened and revealed a sculpture of some kind, presumably one of their important figures. A being clad in armor, carrying a shield on their left arm, a large blunt hammer in the other. Two arms, two legs, head, the rest of the figure was hidden under whatever the armor was, so we still have no idea what these people look like without the armor, but it was a good clue to their culture, Armor provides protection, and the shield? More defense. Hammer? A blunt instrument, used for building things, so these were a people who defended a built we surmised. Explains their massive ship. There was a computer device as well. Similar to our own computer tablets, though with far less processing power or storage space, sluggish controls, and seemingly no support for cerebral cybernetic uplinking, but perhaps that’s what this “Wireless BlueTooth” system was? Speculation. We found a language database, twenty different languages. Two species, twenty languages? Thankfully one was ranked above the others, a dominant language but they haven’t subjugated the other languages before going out into space? Remarkable. A display of unity despite differences, so far these Gaian’s were shaping up to be respectable beings. Diverse and able to work through that for a common goal. Language was plugged into our translators and went to work, while that churned along I explored more of their culture, music was loaded onto their device and I decided to take a listen. It as well. Some of it aggressive, others lax. So far among the rather vast selection they provided, I find myself leaning towards this Jazz genre, perhaps I'll have more appreciation for the others when the translator can make the lyrics understandable. While this is going on the science folk are studying the genetic samples, grumbling that they didn’t use stasis technology and simply threw it in something cold. Good thing blood didn’t need to be warm to study. I reviewed the Liath Beta’s report of their encounter with the Gaian Imperium. The “Hammer and Shield of the people”. They responded to a barely understood distress beacon and defended a pointless world from what they viewed was a hostile aggressive it was. The Nymphilian fleet were wanting to prove themselves in the eyes of the Hierarchy that they could stand watch and chose a respectable target, right on the fringe of our borders where it would be difficult for us to respond in time. In fact it took my ship two days to arrive. So far everything was showing these Gaian’s as commendable beings. Hearty and enduring. Their ship withstood an impressive amount of firepower, Nymphilian ships are some of the hardest for them to be outgunned by kinetic weaponry? No wonder they refer to themselves as “The Hammer and shield” blunt objects, they brute force their way through they have no horns visible in the statue. Perhaps a hard head plate? Best not to speculate, don’t want to unconsciously look upset when their perceived appearance doesn’t match their actual one. We made formal vocal communication after some time, finding a suitable frequency their systems could handle that wasn’t difficult for ours to understand. The first thing they said? “We, The people of Gaia, Come in peace. To protect the weak from their aggressors. And we really hope we aren’t on the wrong side of a war here. ” I explained the situation to them, a bit of conflict resulting in Liath Beta losses is how things function, and that they wouldn’t be penalized for ‘Bloodying Nymphilian Noses’ as they put it. We assured them that everything was fine, it was how things went. A species gets uppity, does a display of strength, loses some people but in the end comes out stronger after a bruising. With that out of the way we set up a meeting to have them come onboard my vessel for proper introductions, get first impressions out of the way to report back to our higher ups so the leaders of our people could get together and hash out big picture details. Their shuttle came over, an odd looking thing. Shaped like a fat avian, angular and... a bit intimidating. Three people exited the shuttle, their representative and two guards. All clad head to toe in armor, though the representative had some kind of coat overtop of their armor. The guards with here posing, and they had something of tensity to them, something that tickled at my long forgotten instincts from behind their covered faces. Though eventually the representative removed their mask, revealing That straight forward gaze, those lips curled and fangs, yes fangs, barred at me. Then they bowed. “Admiral Elly Santos, coming aboard Hierarchy Diplomatic vessel. ” The documents I read said they display their front teeth with a curl of their lips as a greeting. It made no mention of fangs. I’m fairly certain I had gulped loud enough for them to hear as they stood straight up again. “Ah, I must be intimidating. Being your size in height. ” I regained my composure and cleared my throat. “I apologize, culture shock, you must understand. We have never encountered... anything like you. ” I nervously chuckle. “I am First Contact Officer Endala Yulna, pleasure to meet you at last. ” A chuckle comes from Elly. “Oh boy, then you need to steel yourself, and your higher ups, cause there is a lot stranger folk back home than me. ” I stare at them, then, without knowing what else to do present my hand for their hand shake. At least that was common enough. They took my hand and shook it before nodding. “So, My superiors are days away still, I assume yours milarly, how do you wish to conduct this? ” I blink and simply motioned for them to follow. “Standard procedure. We meet, sit down, discuss with each other. We will make mistakes so the higher ups don’t. ” I looked behind me at Elly, their guards were with them still. They moved, I was surprised to see them there as I didn’t hear them following with us. Elly simply nodded in agreement to my statement. We reached the door to the meeting room I entered first and Elly followed behind, arms crossed behind their back. Their guards silently took positions outside the door and stayed there as it closed. I found myself staring at Elly’s face. Something about it was... familiar, hauntingly so. Something in the back of my mind was... terrified of this being in front of me. Now I am a Gome, my species are on average a little more than a meter tall, most beings are much larger than us and intimidating. This not intimidating, they were ticking some deep fear inside of me. Something long forgotten. “Well, let’s get settled in and trip over our feet and make mistakes where it doesn’t matter, hmm? ” Elly stated the truth, and snapped me out of my stupor. I suppressed that new emotion of terror for the time being and focused on my duty. “So, your Imperium? There for your people are Gaians yes? ” Elly gave a nodding shrug. “Our collective people, yes. Individually though, I am a Human. Homo Sapien of Gaia. We nically two subspecies and one alien species living in the Imperium. ” I recalled now, four vials, one of each species? I wonder what the lab results would be. “Four different species? How did that come to be? The blood samples sent over two were different from the others, but they looked the same as each other. ” With a nod and chuckle from Elly they leaned back to get comfortable in the chair. Mercifully they had the same basic anatomy as most sentient beings. “For starters, we have been dealing with alien influence a while. ” I was about to ask questions before they chuckled. “I’ll get to it eventually. Simply put a meteor crashed on Gaia during our... Unification war, a period in our history i’ll be happy to discuss later but for now let’s address your first question. ” Oh so many questions I had already! But I let them continue. “Admittedly, this is speculation on how it arrived to earth, we weren’t able to track down the exact meteor, all we know is a meteor shower rained on Gaia, and a few months after that some of our vehicles were rangely. ” “ in motorized transportation? ” Elly nodded and continued. “As I said, the vehicles started Hulls became damp and cool, strange silver veins grew along the inside of the critical components. After a few weeks the vehicles became flooded with some kind of nanite fluid. ” Clearing their throat and seemingly thinking back on the details of the events. “So a handful of our single person motorcycles to heavily armored tanks were quarantined, studied, and taught. ” I simply blinked and stared. “You mean to tell me, a nanite virus infected your technology and made it sentient? ” Elly raised their hands up and shrugged their shoulders, this being translated as a vague ‘I know as much as you do at this point’. Elly simply leaned forward and sighed. “I mean, you guys got vanced tech right? Surely you lot have heard of weirder stuff right? ” I simply shake my head. “How many firsts are you people going to bring to the Hierarchy? You’re already the first species whom on first contact managed to ward off a fleet of some of our best ships, and your ship is, according to you, not even an aggressive model. ” Elly simply grinned, I flinched a moment as my translator told me their face was one of pride. “Yeah, we made Columbus there tough, never know what you might find out in the black of space. ” Clearly a paranoid what about that smile bothers me so much? Elly simply shifted in their seat again. “So, We decided to call the virus the Dire Machine virus, or cause scientists are nerds at heart and love in jokes. From that we made steps to properly incorporate this new species into our growing society. We We weren’t at we were trying to peacefully conquer the globe. But I’m rambling…” Clearing their throat again. “We incorporated these new beings into our ranks, things were Tensions between us, other nations worried about this ‘nanite plague’ infecting vehicles. The other nations as kind as we were in our studies of the Dire machines. And we obably more lax than we should have been teractions between people and the Dires…” Elly fidgets, a hint of embarrassment on their face. “And so we discovered that the nanite virus does affect organic given repeated exposure. And it manages to convert enough of an individual they grow an organic steel like material on their extremities, hands and feet mostly. And with that are capable no point beating around the bush, successful breeding between the two, resulting in what we refer to as Technomorphs. ” So the Gaian Imperium has... a race of living sentient machines with them. The idea of a subservient species isn’t that foreign to the Hierarchy, quite a few races have been uplifted for that purpose. And robot helpers are, again, needed in many areas. How ever, Machine life? Sentient technology that they umbled across by chance? “You realize this is... extremely farfetched, yes? ” I asked Elly, staring at them while typing this down. “Well, considering we colonized our whole solar system, and went many empty solar systems with no signals, no signs of life, nothing. We picked up nothing on long range sensors, nothing at all until that distress signal. And we barely heard that. All we understood was “Help, In trouble” and came to assist. I say that should speak for who we are as a people, rather than what makes up our flesh and blood. ” I have to admit, a point. “Very well, and I take it are going to be part of the delegation meeting with the higher ups? ” Elly blinked with confusion and cleared their throat. “Ah, no. All over. ” With a groan Elly’s hands slide across their face. “Thankfully all they did was cause new born people to be born traits. That’s how it started anyway. Months later another born in egypt with scales and a serpent tongue and nally a year after that the first fully anthropomorphic being, a cat, was born in switzerland. This was because PETA in way, wanted to bridge the gap between man and animal, to ‘humanize animals so people don’t abuse them’ as they claimed. So, yeah, it worked? The Imperium simply shrugged and accepted them as people, as we had done with the Dire Machines. More people, more strength. How has your technology vanced? ” I heard a strange tone from Elly, my translator picking it up as ‘mock offense’. “Why I never, we have advanced technologically a great deal since then! Gauss weaponry has been perfected, we have also perfected slip space travel AND terraforming of worlds! ” They responded to my statement of facts and responded with a joke, showing that what I said might be considered an insult. Something to note to the council. “Pardon, but compared to the technology is woefully out of date. No shield technology, still using kinetic projectile weaponry as your main offensive and defensive tools, and not to mention your portable computer technology. And don’t even get me started on what ever insane method you use to travel, every species the Hierarchy has found or discovered used the same basic principles for faster than light space travel, it all produces the same energy signature no matter how they actually get the engines going. ” Elly grinned that prideful and terrifying smile again. “Slip space drives. Massive gravity well is created and we…curve space between the point where our ship is, and where our destination is. Near instant travel, but has a range limit. We had to jump three times before reaching this planet. ” The insanity of it all. The absolute insanity. “You…” I stammer. “ an artificially created gravity just…fly to where you need to be? That…” “Is the most awesome method of space travel. I know! Out of our best science fiction! ” I gasp. “It’s insane! Dangerous! How do your people survive the intense gravity? ” “I tificial gravity dampeners on the ship. Plus a sturdy hull. Everything is designed to compensate for the travel. How does your FTL stuff work? ” With a groan I lean forward, stroking my horns with a sign. I have just been given a bombshell of a technological difference. “Ship mass is manipulated by the FTL drive and it is accelerated at a faster than light speed. The energy signature generated by such is... unmistakable, it’s how we find worlds to welcome to the Hierarchy because the method you described was deemed scientifically unsound, unsafe, and lethal to the occupants on board the vessel! ” Elly simply blinked. “Did you ever try it? ” Of all the questions. “No! The energy needed wasn’t a problem, it’s just a matter of intense gravity, not to mention hazardous radiation from the energy sources needed is intensely lethal to all life. ” Elly nodded. “Yeah, nuclear fission is a bitch to deal with, still amazed Vodka helps. But those who do end up with cancer due to improper shielding of engine compartments are given the best care. Many make a full recovery. ” I did not just hear that. I refuse to believe what I just heard. “Your people are going to be given so many sanctions for endangerment of yourselves. ” Elly looks at me with obvious confusion. “You just said you have a nuclear fission engine for your ships, yes? I did hear that correctly despite my intense desire to wish I didn’t. ” Elly simply nodded and I slump back in my chair. “That technology has been banned beginning of the Hierarchy. Elly simply nods, clearly making mental notes. “Well then. Give us the tech and we can see about refitting our ships with your superior methods. ” I let out a groan and mimic Elly’s earlier action. Hands across my face in mild frustration. “…” I remembered something. “You managed to colonize an entire star system yes? And you have visited many since? How many colonies do you have, how many ships that you can sually offer to refit all of them with new tech? How can you afford that? ” That grin again. “Afford? As ” Oh I swear if this Imperium somehow is working off a tribal barter system instead of a monetary one I am going to retire immediately after this even in the middle of it. They are proving to be the very opposite of what I had seen! “Yes! Money, how do you people get anything done if you don’t exchange currency for tasks and duties? It’s what keeps people motivated and working. ” They laughed softly and simply stared down while doing so. “Oh, please forgive me, it’s we followed some rules of ours when we created the Imperium. The goal was to make a culture to unify our planet, be welcoming of all and do our best so they keep their culture while following our laws. We believed that for a civilization to, accepted into galactic society we would have to be of a certain society sophistication. Something resembling a Utopia, meaning no homeless, no people going hungry, the needs of life for even the lowest of our society would be provided for. ” “We have all those things, yes, but money is still used within cultures and between species to exchange for technology, information, all manner of things. ” A sigh escapes me as I type away. “You are a strange people. How do you motivate your people without money then? If all their needs are met, how do they not just laze about and do nothing? ” “Two reasons. One, our people can not be idle. Always mething. When given the freedom to choose what they want to do though... without the worry of not having a home, without the worry of ‘will I have enough money for food’, they focus on their desires, goals, pursuits with intensity. ” A proud smile on Elly’s face as I examine their words, what kind of people can’t be idle? “Second. We have a hierarchy to our society. There are the Migrants and the Citizens. Now for needs, even most wants, are addressed. Migrants get group housing in apartment complexes, Citizens get their own homes. Migrants use public transportation, Citizens can own their own vehicle. Migrants can have certain quality of food, Citizens can get higher quality. Those that perform well can become a citizen, or earn a boon such as one of the benefits that citizens have. ” I simply nod my head. A caste system, crude but... effective. Work your way up society. I’m still fixated on the need for activity. Most races in the Hierarchy have bursts of energy, but all of them can very easily become complacent and lazy and do anything. “That ceptable. But your lack of a monetary system will be... difficult to get over. ” A sigh escapes Elly as their head leans back before they lean forward again. “Precious metals, rare minerals. The universal currency is materials. Your people no doubt have a price for Gold, Iron, other such materials. We can offer these up in exchange for your currency from there. Internally we will never again adopt a monetary system. It and corruption in our people. And I feel bad for the people who become the treasurers… inquisitors will be keeping an eye on them. ” Elly shudders at the mention of quisitors. “And these Inquisitors internal police force I presume? ” The word translated to range. Seeker of Truth. Elly nodded. “They were the founding of the Terran Imperium. The first stage of our Imperium when we set out to conquer all of Gaia…” A proud lancholy expression Elly’s face. “They were made by Maritrixis, a strange alien whom our founders discovered out in the desert. Some forgotten nazi scientist lab trying to uncover the secrets of her people. She aided the founders of our Imperium, gifted them the only technology she had to created the Inquisition. No one but the Inquisition knows how the Inquisitors are made. But they mething else. Unyielding. Incorruptible seekers of truth. ” I simply scoff. “Incorruptible? Anyone can be tempted, swayed somehow, to go against their for a brief moment. A look the other way over some trivial matter. Elly stared at me with an intensity that made me want to curl in on myself. “ Not the inquisitors. I don’t know how they do it, but in the entire history of our Imperium not a one has ever turned against the imperium or it’s ideals, they would sooner die. It’mething in how they are are chosen, those who show devotion to the Imperial ideals are taken, trained survive and become Inquisitors. ” I managed to regain myself after their moment tense passion. “And these people to police you? Tell you what to do? ” Elly groans. “They don’t do that, they make sure the politicians don’t get power hungry or try to change things that would bring about the collapse of the imperium, or corrupt it from within. ” Clearing their throat. “We are the Hammer and Shield. Because we are Strong. The Strong protect the Weak. And We are the Hammer and Shield. ” A matra of some kind, the Gaian people’s creed it would seem. An admirable statement. “Still quisitors, surely they have some oversight. Someone they report to? They can’t an elected… your leaders are elected yes? ” Elly chuckled and nodded. “Yes, we elect our leaders and yes they can remove and elected official from office by extreme force if needed. So far in our entire history that happened. How ever governors of colonies and the like have gotten uppity, they were mercifully removed from office by the people, a vote of no then quietly taken away by Inquisitors to make sure their ideals had not spread to others. ” That was a scary thought. “ was Maritrixis? You said an alien that aided your people? It’s not uncommon for worlds to have ran into a lone being from another world but for them to have aided you in such a way rious. ” A potentially unknown race aided in ‘uplifting’ these people and left these Inquisitors behind to keep them in check. This has ‘Mol’tok’ incident all over Liath are probably behind this. Elly smiles, I’ll never get over that threat display display of happiness and as a people. “She alien. Eight foot tall, pale white skin, solid ebony eyes, no have some historical recordings of her I can share with you, but just imagine me but much taller, much paler, and my eyes all black. ” Elly smiled again just as I envisioned what she said. That is why she terrified me., Prometheans were long dead at worse, myth at best! I must be not remembering correctly, i’ll have to examine these records of Elly’s. For now, on with the meeting. “And she just did this out of kindness of her heart? She practically uplifted your people from the sound of things. Without her you probably would have collapsed and never made it where you are now. ” With a nod of agreement Elly resumed speaking. “That is very much true. She gave us the matter conversion technology, and the inquisitors to police the founders set the ideals the inquisitors would ensure. The strong protect the weak, never oppress. We will always seek peaceful resolution to societal conflicts, never seek active if such cannot be achieved we will hold no punches should it come to war. ” A chuckle escaped Elly. “The Imperator said it best. “War is what happens when civilizations fail. If it comes to war, civilization will not hinder or impact War. We can and will beat you into submission. We will leave you scarred after the conflict in such ways you never consider war again. And always live in fear of having to do it again. Always hoping, praying, we never again have to unleash that horror upon others or ourselves. ” I she passed on peacefully. ” I have so many questions. Address in chronological order. “Excuse me, Matter conversion technology? That is a wholly unstable and dangerous technology. Breaking down materials into raw atoms and reconstructing them as something else requires…” And then it hits me. Their nuclear wonder they love it so much, THAT much power, unstable as it may be, would allow them to power such a dangerous technology. “Never mind, you’ve told me about your fission still for it to create a stable math just isn’t there yet. And this alien you the technology? ” “The base material’s still have to milar. And we still have to have a blueprint of the end result material. The problem will be a copy of the blueprint. So say we took dirt and made it into sand. We have a few hundred variations of sand, but there are billions of variations of dirt is converted only into that few hundred variations. And, energy limitations as can only make so much of a resource a day, and we still have to consume enough other raw matter to compensate. ” Elly clears their throat and leans forward. “Does trading a thousand kilograms of lead for a hundred kilograms of gold sound like a fair trade? ” I shake my head, so the technology has conversion limits, and they still require mining. “So what good does this technology do you then? ” I inquired with a growing curiosity. Elly simply chuckled. “Feeds us. The basic needs of life to replicate. Grain to feed our farm animals, raw materials to build housing and roads. It’s fantastic for recycling. ” a good point. Any waste materials could be broken down and remade into something similar, but useful. And these people have it little with it. But I have done much. Their people don’t starve without the need of firm coaxing to work. I returned to an unanswered question “ Maritrixis, you never did say why she helped your people. ” Elly’s face flushed red. “Ah, right, I rambled, forgive me, nostalgia for history, a personal weakness. She helped us were her children. ” No, no, no. Do not say what I think you’re going to say next, please… “She said her people seeded our world with life, millenia ago. And that her Their hubris brought about their end. Greed, paranoia, cruelty. Now most species have instinctual responses to stimuli, some salivate at the smell of certain leaves or burning of wood, others at the sight of the food itself rather than the smell. Occasionally two species share similar stimuli from the same source. But for hundreds of species to all share this instinctual response to these beings? To have similar stories of these predators from the stars? It’s theorized the Prometheans seeded all life in the galaxy and as such left their mark, this instinctual fear of them, in every sentient what purpose? Speculation leads why would anything want to be feared? To subjugate, dominate uncontested. And beings No trace of them is seen. No ruins, have been discovered, nothing showing they existed at all, it’s all just... speculation. Theories. As such it’s treated as fiction. I am distrubed by a ping on my system. I've still got some unpacking and arranging to do, and work's been busier than I had hoped, but I managed to get this one knocked out. At 7242 words, it's a bit shorter than the last few full episodes, but it sets some stuff up for upcoming episodes, and answers a few questions about magic and elves. I'm looking at doing a Q&A livestream sometime later in December. I don't want to get too close to the holiday, but I'll have some time off in the second half of the month that should give me plenty of flexibility for it, plus I should have everything mostly unpacked by then. Upcoming episodes include another trip to Earth, this time For Science!, and the keshmin artificer squad's arrival. There will probably be a few time skips during that period, because I don't want to get too bogged down in joint tactics development, and I want to move the story on to events after that, but there will definitely be some PT session fun, and a visit to a keshmin town (which will probably be a multi-episode adventure arc). Three Marines, none of them older than twenty-three, and one German Shepherd. “Are you sure we didn’t get any of the bastards? ” General Zoroiwchak asked. His uniform was barely ruffled, despite having spent the night in the wrong FOB on lockdown. “No, sir, ” Lieutenant Colonel Mayhew said, shaking his head. His sleepless night reflected in the slight bags under his eyes. “There’s a blood trail that leads over the berm and into the woods, and we’ve got a dog team backed by half a platoon on it now, but no bodies so far. ” Not fast enough… Michaels resisted the urge to rub his own baggy eyes. Between the lockdown and the sweep of the base, the elves have enough of a head start… They’re probably across the river and halfway to keeblerville by now. “How did they get in? ” he asked. “The Ganlin gave us those beacons to set up around the FOB, to disrupt their invisibility. ” “They did, but they didn’t give us enough, ” Mayhew shook his head. “Not for how much we’ve had to expand the perimeter. ” “Have they been shorting us? ” Sergeant Major Miller asked. Michaels suppressed a frown. Miller always struck him as being too quick to throw the blame on someone than was appropriate, especially for a regimental Sergeant Major. “No, I don’t think so, ” Mayhew shook his head. “The reports my men have given me say they’re struggling even with the supplies we’ve shared with them. ” He sighed, rubbing gunk out of his eye. “And the number of beacons I’ve seen set up around their own camp indicate that they don’t have enough beacons left to cover themselves. ” “So they slipped in through the cracks? ” Colonel Anders asked. “Essentially, sir, yes, ” Sergeant Major Donalds said. The broad-shouldered man resembled a bulldog. Michaels knew him by his reputation for being as tenacious and stubborn as one, but he looked just as tired as his commanding officer. “The way the goat-cat wizards explained it, the beacons’ effectiveness starts to taper off after a certain distance. At the edges, it’s almost nothing, and a skilled Keebler wizard can keep their shit stable through it. ” “So we don’t have enough overlap? ” “Worse, sir, ” Donalds said. “We’ve got total gaps in coverage. Not all the beacons have been moved since initially set up, but we’ve identified some total gaps that you could drive an Abrams through, and the whole perimeter is scattered with weak areas. ” “How many got in? Are there any still inside? ” “We’re not entirely sure, ” Mayhew said. “But between the reports, what little security camera coverage we had in the area, and two Go-Pros, we’re pretty certain it was a team of eight. ” “We did a thorough sweep of the base with the dogs, ” Donalds said. He nodded at the slain Shepherd. “Sergeant Razer caught on to them right quick, led her team straight to the bastards. Whatever they’ve got, it don’t block a dog’s nose. ” Zoroiwchak nodded, then sighed. “Let’s let these boys lie in peace. ” Michaels gave a silent nod to the fallen Marines, paying his final respects. They weren’t his men, all of Second Battalion had been moved back to Tolkien, but they were still Marines. “Do we have any idea what their objectives were? ” Zoroiwchak asked as he stepped out of the tent, followed closely by his aide and the rest of the party. “Not for sure, no, ” Mayhew said. “Nothing has been identified as missing, and they hadn’t gotten very far into the camp before Razer led Corporal Ramirez and Corporal Goldberg right to them. ” “We swept the camp for anything they might have left behind, ” Donalds said, “Even got a couple of the goat-cat wizards to come over and scan for anything they might have deployed, came up with nothing. ” “They were probably doing recon, ” Michaels said. “That’s what we figured, too, ” Mayhew nodded. “Well, now they know we’re vulnerable, ” Miller said. “And it cost us three Marines and a dog, and five more injured to tell them that. ” Their conversation was interrupted by the ringing of a cellphone. Tolkien was close enough to the portal to get regular cell signal, and repeaters had been set up to provide signal inside FOB Williams, though it was still spotty in some portions of the base. Zoroiwchak’s aide, a young lieutenant, pulled the phone out of his pocket and answered it. After a brief conversation, his eyebrows shot up, and he held the phone out. “Sir, you need to take this. ” Zoroiwchak raised an eyebrow and took the phone. “General Zoroiwchak. Sir. … Shit. Aye, sir. Yes, sir. I concur, sir. Yes, sir, we can make that happen. No sir. Will they need support? Aye, sir. I’ll have units standing by just in case. We’ll get it locked down, sir. ” He hung up the phone, handing it back to his aide. “Anders, get Miramar on the horn, tell them to pull half the stockpile we raided from the elves and make it ready for immediate delivery. ” He turned to Mayhew. “Send a message to the keshmin that we need more of those disruptor shitasses ASAP, and that they can have as many of the mana crystals we liberated from the elves as they need to make them. We need a solid perimeter around Williams and Tolkien with no gaps. ” He turned back to his aide “Clemson, get on the horn with the MWD commanders, tell them we need a continuous patrol around both perimeters. We need every dog that can be spared sent to the front for patrols, and we need them here yesterday. ” “What happened? ” Michaels asked. He scowled. “One of the bastards slipped through to Earth. ” “Shit. ” “How bad is it? ” Mayhew asked. “He murdered a family and was camping in their house. County Sheriffs were sent to check on the family this morning, and he killed one of the deputies before getting away. ” “Shit. ” “Has it hit the media yet? ” Miller asked. “Not yet, but they’re already standing up a state-wide manhunt, and every three-letter agency between San Diego and DC is throwing their hat in the ring. Getting some kind of augment integration with the keshmin wizards just took on a whole new priority, and so did figuring out whether or not any of us can play with magic. ” “Are the Berkley boys ready? The artificer my Marines adopted cleared medical, and we sent him Earth-side yesterday for more scans after he volunteered to share his medical data. ” “Yeah, I saw your brief on that. I’ll get on the horn with Berkley and make sure they step up the pace. When is the wizard team supposed to show up? ” “They’re selecting their artificers now. They’re supposed to arrive on Tuesday. ” “Good. Get them sorted and start training hard. This new shitstorm is going to have us on lockdown for a bit, but General Langstrom’s offensive is aggressive enough as it is. Rinn perked an ear at the discussion, but opted not to join the conversation. It was the most he had moved since he had flopped down against the wall. “Seriously, though, this fucking sucks. ” Davies shook his head. “How are we supposed to catch the bastards if they can turn fucking invisible? ” “Elven commandos, man. ” Stephens said, staring across the cleared field on the other side of the wall into the trees beyond. “Fuckin’ elven commandos. Instead, he slid along the wall until he fell over. Bradford squatted down and poked him some more. “C’mon, Shields, how’re you gonna keep your stave going if you pass out? She failed to notice Rinn slipping his tail into one of the straps on her pack until the sharp tug threw off the balance of her squat and she found herself on her ass. She blinked in surprise, then joined the rest of the squad in laughter. “You sneaky bastard! ” Rinn flicked his tail up to press the end against her mouth. “Shhhhh…. ” She swatted his tail away as they all laughed again. “Heads up, here comes trouble, ” Dubois said, nodding towards a Humvee barreling their way. “It’s not time for our reliefs, yet, is it? ” Davies asked. “Nope, ” said Miller. “C’mon, shields, time to put your armor back on. ” Bradford poked him in the side again. Rinn groaned, but sat up and dragged the plate carrier over. Bradford helped him put it on, then hauled him to his feet. “I can barely move in this thing, how can you stand to run in it? ” “Lots of PT, ” Gomez said. “And knee problems, ” Kimber added. “Yeah, ” Kawalski grunted. “I figure I’ll have enough joint damage by the time I get out, I’ll be making E-Five for life. ” Further conversation was forestalled by the Humvee as it roared up and ground to a halt with a squeal of breaks. The doors swung open and Lieutenant Meyers and Staff Sergeant Rickles stepped out. A pair of MPs stepped out behind them, followed by two dogs and their handlers that had squeezed into the back. “Second Artificer Ahyat, ” Meyers said, stepping up to the squad. “You’re to come with us for questioning. Rex and Lucy will cover your sector. ” “What kind of questioning, sir? ” Kawalski said, immediately on edge. The rest of the squad fell in behind Bradford, and she saw Kimber and Sampson putting themselves between Rinn and the Lieutenant. “The technical kind, ” Rickles said, giving them a small, calming wave. “He’s more valuable for his expertise than as a sentry right now. ” The squad relaxed a bit, though Kawalski still gave the MPs a suspicious eye. “I’d still like to come along, sir, ” Bradford said, stepping forward. “He falls under my command. If you’re going to be questioning him, I should be there. ” She paused, then added as the thought occurred to her. “You might also need someone to translate. ” Meyers gave her a considering look, then nodded. “Very well. Pile in. ” “Aye, sir, ” she nodded, then glanced over her shoulder. “Dubois, you’re in charge until I get back. ” “Aye, Sergeant. ” She caught Davies’ frown as she turned back to the Lieutenant and she and Rinn followed him to the Humvee. Technically Davies is more senior, but… If he wanted to maintain seniority, he shouldn’t have gone sickbay commando. Bradford put the concern out of her mind as Rinn passed her his stave and climbed into the back of the Humvee after her. He groaned as he settled himself into a position that had a passing resemblance to comfortable. She grinned and tapped him on the arm, leaning over to whisper in his ear. “Heh, they sent two dog teams to replace you, and you were mostly passed out and hungover. ” Rinn snorted, taking his stave back and curling up with it as he leaned against the bulkhead. He smirked like he was going to give her a smart remark, but the Humvee jolted, bouncing his head off the bulkhead, and he just whimpered and groaned instead. **** “At ease, Sergeant. ” The tall, lanky, Navy Lieutenant shut the door behind him. “I’m Lieutenant Bauder, Office of Naval Intelligence. ” He shifted a folder and notebook to his left hand and offered a handshake as Bradford introduced herself and Rinn. “To be clear, Sergeant, Second Artificer, nobody’s in trouble, but we are in desperate need of information, technical and non-technical, and there are few people in a better position to provide that than yourself, ” he nodded at Rinn. “I will share what I can, sir, ” Rinn said, standing almost at attention just to keep himself from swaying. Bradford repeated his words for Bauder’s benefit. “Excellent, ” Bauder said, dropping his folder and notebook down on the table and sitting across from Bradford and Rinn. “Let’s start with invisibility. ” Bradford glanced around the room as she and Rinn returned to their seats. They had barely been sitting for more than a minute before the Lieutenant had arrived. More an “unfinished closet” than “interrogation room” vibe, but it’s not far off… Bauder opened the folder and flipped to a blank page in his notebook, clicking his pen a few times as he found his starting point in the papers in the folder. “We understand that they have two versions. Is this correct? ” “Yes. ” Rinn nodded. Bradford continued her translation. “They have their blending, and true invisibility. ” “Can you elaborate on ‘blending? ’” “Yes. ” He took a moment to collect his thoughts. His ears drooped, and Bradford could tell his movements were slower and more deliberate than usual, but he was putting on a strong front. “Blending is… a blending of their appearance with their surroundings. Light does not pass through them, but they create the appearance that it does. ” He paused to allow Bradford to translate, and she got the feeling he was using the break to piece more words together. Bauder nodded, jotting an abbreviated version down on his notepad. “Is this effect biological? Is it their skin changing? ” He added in response to Rinn’s uncertain look. Some of our expressions translate really well… Bradford thought. “No. ” Rinn started to shake his head, then immediately thought better of it. “It is… An illusion they create, that covers anything they are wearing or holding. ” “It sounds like active camouflage, sir, ” Bradford added at the end of her translation. “Indeed, ” the Lieutenant nodded. He looked back to Rinn. “What are the advantages? The limitations? How good of an illusion is it? ” “The quality of the blend can vary from one elf to the next, but they can’t perfectly recreate what is behind them, and even the best can be seen at close range by an observant watcher. ” Rinn paused for another translation. “So far as we can tell, it requires more energy to maintain than an elf can sustain indefinitely, but it’s a relatively light draw on their reserves. Rapid shifts in the background, or in lighting, can also give them away. ” Bauder looked up from his notes. “Is this a…” he glanced at another sheet of notes. “An artifice that the keshmin can create? ” “No, ” Rinn slowly shook his head. “We have tried, and there are experiments, but… The spell structure is incredibly refined and complex. We can create illusions, but not to nearly the same detail or precision, nor that conform so completely. ” “And what about ‘true invisibility? ’” Bauder asked, jotting a note down then flipping to a fresh page. “True Invisibility is… it’s just that. They are truly invisible. Light passes right through them. ” Bauder nodded. “Yes. We have limited data, but between the various vehicle-mounted sensors in the first battle, and security sensors we set up around FOB Williams, it seems that their invisibility covers not just the visible light spectrum, but also IR and near-UV. Do you know if their invisibility covers the full EM spectrum, or just parts of it? ” Rinn frowned, slowly cocking his head to the side. “I do not know what you speak of. ” Bradford turned to him after translating his confusion. “All light is made of what we call photons, unimaginably tiny particles that move incredibly fast. ” “That sounds like the Speck Theory of light. It proposes that light is made of individual specks, rather than waves in the ether, which is the accepted understanding. ” “Well… it’s, um, both, actually… Except there’s no ether. ” Bradford smiled as his confusion deepened. “We can discuss the peculiarities of wave-particle duality at another time. ” Bauder said. “The important part is that photons have a frequency, and the colors we see, and whether we even see them, depend on that frequency. Above visible light is ultra-violet light, then X-Rays and Gamma Rays. Below visible light is infra-red, microwaves, radio waves. ” Rinn shook his head. “I am not the most scholarly keshmin, but I attended the University at Yagyhanae, one of the most highly regarded universities in the Kingdom. Nobody spoke of light as anything but what we could see. ” “I see, ” Bauder said, writing in his notebook. “And what are the limitations of true invisibility? ” “Energy, ” Rinn said. “It is a much more energy-intensive spell, and we have never seen them maintain it for any great length of time. Hours at most. ” Bauder nodded, writing more notes. “And can keshmin create anything similar? ” Rinn slowly shook his head. The sophistication of the spell… It is much harder to glean from observation… Articulating the spell should be possible, but the design is so intricate and refined, even what fragments we have been able to capture. ” He placed a hand to the side of his head. “Not that we haven’t tried. There have been experiments, using recorded fragments of the spell and attempting to fill in the blanks, but none that determined anything. ” He snorted. “I remember Professor Simyahn complaining up a storm about some of them, and how they were causing resonance interference with the crystal experiments he was trying to perform. ” Bradford tilted her head after translating the last comment. “Was the experiment on mana crystals? ” “No, ” Rinn said, massaging his skull just forward of the base of his ear. “It was with galena crystals. They are a very poor mana capacitor, barely even count for it, but abundant enough. Professor Simyahn wanted to see if there was a way to make more use of them. ” He sighed at an unpleasant memory. “He would rave at length about mana capacitors so cheap and abundant they could replace raw mana crystals as a storage medium. ” He slid his hand up to rub at the base of his right horn. “Nothing ever came of his experiments. He insisted that it was because of the invisibility experiments, that they were causing resonance in his crystal arrays, disrupting his experiments, even though no mana connection was ever identified. ” He snorted again. “Simyahn was always a crazy, old coot. ” “Maybe not…” Bauder said, exchanging a glance with Bradford. Rinn cocked an ear at him. “Your professor might have made an early crystal radio set…” Rinn turned his ear to her. “Not my area of expertise, ” she laughed, holding up a hand, before glancing at Bauder. “But, sir, if he had…” The lieutenant nodded. This could be important. We’ll definitely look into it. ” He jotted another note down, then flipped to a clean page. “For now, though, there are more questions. ” Bradford heard Rinn suppress a whine, but he sat up straight as the questions dragged on. “Let’s talk about the elves themselves. What are their physical capabilities? ” “They are fast, and agile, and have significant strength in short bursts. ” “How fast can an elf run? ” “Faster than a keshmin in a sprint, slower over any considerable distance, unless they have magical support. ” “How fast can a keshmin run? ” “In a sprint? A hundred tails in ten, twelve seconds. Without armor. ” “And long distance? ” “Maybe seven, eight royal miles in an hour, for a few hours. A properly equipped soldier can march eight or nine royal miles in a day. Fifteen, maybe twenty with a long, forced march. ” “How long can an elf run for? ” “Without mana supplementation, only for a few minutes at speed, maybe an hour at a jog. With mana supplementation, for as long as they have mana reserves. ” “What do you mean by ‘Mana supplementation? ’” “Elves can sustain themselves and stave off exhaustion by bolstering themselves with external mana supplies. ” “Interesting… Do you know how often, or how much they need to eat? Can this replace their need to eat? ” “Elven armies are at least partly sustained by magic, and it is believed that elves can sustain themselves exclusively on mana for a time. ” He sighed, continuing to massage his skull. “I don’t know the details of elven dietary habits. They only eat plants, and look down on us for eating flesh. ” Bauder snorted. “Sounds like a few humans I know…” he muttered, shaking his head. “What kind of magical abilities do they have? This was known for long before the war, when the elves were merely isolationist. ” “What about your people? ” “Only some keshmin do. ” He frowned. “Estimates vary, but the generally accepted figure is between ten and fifteen percent of all keshmin can touch the ether. Only about half of those are potent enough to be useful in combat. ” “How do elven magical abilities compare to keshmin? ” Rinn sighed. “Elven magical abilities exceed keshmin abilities on the whole. Elves naturally draw more mana from the ether, enough to power noteworthy offensive and defensive spells, and they have significant natural mana reserves. ” His hand went back to rubbing his skull, between the base of his horn and his brow. “Keshmin savants can exceed most elven abilities, but even the greatest savant is limited by roughly the same ambient draw cap as any other keshmin, and can’t match an elf for power output without external mana sources. ” “You mean mana crystals? ” “Yes. ” “And where do mana crystals come from? ” “Elves and keshmin can both draw mana from the ether and condense it into crystals, producing new crystals or growing existing crystals. Elves can condense mana into crystal form at a rate at least two to three times greater than the rate of a keshmin. ” “Is this where all mana crystals come from? ” Rinn slowly shook his head. Most mana crystals used by keshmin are mined. We’re not sure what causes their formation, ” he added, anticipating Bauder’s next question. “What about the elves? ” Rinn frowned, staring through the table. “Elves can use mage towers and other means to drain people of life force. ” He rolled his ears and tugged at a horn. “At least, that’s what was thought to happen when such magics were used. ” Bauder raised an eyebrow. Bradford suppressed a shudder at the memory of keshmin chained to a mage tower. “A… more modern understanding, ” Rinn said, deliberately placing his hand back on the table. “Is that such magic employs a process that forces them to draw etherial mana at an accelerated rate, while also force-converting the body’s natural energy stores into mana, possibly to power the process. ” He paused, his ears flicking down. “The full details are not known. Such magics were outlawed across the kingdoms centuries before they consolidated under Ganlin. We didn’t know the elves even practiced such magic until the war. ” Bradford felt a sinking feeling in her stomach as she relayed the translation, only made worse by Bauder’s next question. “What do they use such magic for? ” “The elves use the process to turn people into living batteries to directly power artifices. ” He paused, his ears flicking back to his skull. “It is also possible, in theory, to create mana crystals in this way. We have never observed it, but there is no mechanical reason why they couldn’t. ” Bradford’s stomach felt like it wanted to turn inside-out. Bauder sat back in shock for a moment, but pressed forward. “All those crystals we captured at the elven camp…? ” Rinn nodded, his hand moving back up to slowly massage his skull. “It is suspected that a significant portion of the mana crystals used by the elves came from keshmin prisoners. ” “But, if…” Bradford’s stomach dropped through her chair as she made another realization. “They’re fucking vampires. ” Rinn flicked a confused ear at her, tilting his head to glance at her. “They can live off mana, and they suck people dry of it. ” She snarled, horror and rage battling for dominance. “They turn people into mana and eat them! ” “Yes. That is…” His ears drooped and he nodded. “We believe that is so. ” Bauder took a moment to recompose himself. He jotted several notes down, then flipped to a clean page. “Can an individual elf boost his endurance, or does that take a group or more sophisticated equipment than an individual can carry? ” “No, it is something that all elves can do. ” Rinn shrugged his ears. “Our understanding is that it works in the same way that any keshmin artificer would draw on mana, but they are able to apply it to themselves in ways that we are not. ” He firmly shook his head, and immediately grimaced in regret. “Ugh. Not even the worst dark artificers in legend and lore were able to sustain themselves with mana like that. ” “How much mana would a single elf go through to sustain heavy activity for a day? ” “I am not sure. ” “Best guess. ” Rinn frowned, concentrating. “The elven armies, they… They maneuver with an economy of endurance. ” He rubbed the other side of his face. “They luxuriate in an abundance of mana, but they still conserve their maneuvers. I think it takes a lot of mana for them to supplement their natural endurance. ” “How long do you think a single elf could sustain himself with just what he could carry on his person? How rapidly would he be depleted? ” Bradford narrowed her eyes, the pointed questions suddenly becoming very suspicious. “I don’t know…” Rinn carefully shook his head. “I am a shield artificer, not a physician or a naturalist. ” “One of them got through, didn’t they, sir? ” Rinn’s ears perked up, lagging for only a fraction of a second. “I am not at liberty to answer that question, Sergeant. ” “You don’t have to say anything, sir, it’s fucking obvious just by your questions. ” “I can help. ” Rinn slid his chair back and pushed himself to his feet. “Can you pin-point an elf’s exact location? ” Bauder looked up at him, his pen still poised over his notepad. “…. No. ” “Can you track an elf from miles away? ” “No…” “Then I’m not sure you can actually be of much help. ” Rinn sighed, sitting back down, his ears drooping. Bauder eyed him for a moment, then set his pen down on his notepad and leaned forward. “You’ve already helped a lot. We’re lacking for intel more than anything else right now. ” He sat back with a shake of his head, picking his pen up and absently twirling it in his fingers. “There’s a county-wide manhunt drawing resources from across the state. We’ve got dogs on the trail, and the county sheriffs haven’t asked for military help. ” Rinn raised his right ear, quirking it in confusion. “Rules and laws, ” Bradford said, resisting the urge to ruffle his ears. “The military is kept strictly separate from law enforcement and civil matters. Things tend to get messy when the military is also the police. ” Rinn started opening his mouth like he wanted to ask more, but closed it again when Bauder leaned forward and continued. “Right now, we need intel more than anything. Anything you can tell us about their capabilities, vulnerabilities, equipment, armor, anything. ” “Right…” Rinn scrunched his eyes shut for a moment, refocusing himself. “Armor…” He took a deep breath. “Elven armor is light and thin, but heavily enchanted. It is laced and embossed with gold and platinum to help hold enchantments. ” “What is it made of, mostly? ” “It is made of steel, but barely thick enough to be rigid on its own without enchantment. Most of its strength comes from those enchantments. They make it strong enough to turn or deflect any regular blade if it doesn’t find a gap. ” “Is keshmin armor the same? ” The advantages that could give us are obvious… Bradford thought. Rinn shook his head. “Ganlin armor is rarely so enchanted. Making such armor is certainly within the capabilities of a decent artificer, but the Royal Host’s Lord Generals typically do not deem it to be worth the cost in time, materials, and mana, at least for common soldiers. We mainly rely on bolstering our arms and armor with active enchantments provided by battlefield artificers, like myself. ” “Is this something you can do for us? ” Bradford asked, heading off the Lieutenant’s next question. “Yes, ” Rinn nodded. “Active shields are my specialty, but all field artificers are trained to bolster their lines and columns with active enchantments. ” “How does this active enchantment compare to the elves… fixed enchantment? ” “Favorably enough, if we have the mana to support it. Even bolstered by active artificer support, our weapons often struggle to penetrate the armor worn by elven regulars, but they have the same problem when our armor is properly reinforced. “Except for Gemblades. ” “Gemblades? ” “The elven elite regiments. They have even further-enchanted armor and mana gem-powered blades that can cut through even artificer-enhanced keshmin armor. ” “Combat reports noted that some elves had shields, while others did not. ” “Yes, ” Rinn slowly bobbed his head. “Elves trained as mages with mana gem-powered staffs can project personal shields in addition to general shield work, and offensive spell casting. ” He paused a moment, then added, “Senior elven regulars sometimes have devices that project weaker shields. ” “You’ve mentioned mana gems twice now. Is that another term for mana crystal? ” “No. “Mana gems are made of condensed mana, like mana crystals, but they have a much more intricate and complex structure. They’re very difficult, and somewhat dangerous to make, and very specialized. ” “How so? ” “Gemblade mana gems can’t be turned into staff mana gems, and vice-versa. They’re also tuned specifically to the creator elf, and not easily used by even other elves, let alone non-elves. We haven’t figured out how to make them, either, ” he added. “So an elf can either be a gemblade, or a wizard, not both? ” “Not that I’ve ever heard of…” He tugged at an ear. “I suppose it’s possible, but we’ve never seen it. ” He released his ear, rolling them both in a shrug. “There wasn’t a whole lot known about the elves before the war, but one of the things we did know was that they held their mana gems very precious and dear, because it was an arduous and dangerous process to create them that many elves never even undertook. ” Bauder’s pocket buzzed in three short pulses, interrupting his next question before he could ask it. He pulled out his phone, swiping up on the screen to check the message. “That’s enough questions for now. You’ll have plenty more tomorrow at the lab, ” he said, putting his phone back in his pocket and collecting his notes. He stood and left the room with barely a glance at either of them. Rinn heaved a sigh of relief, sagging in on himself as the lieutenant left. Damn, he looks so miserable… Bradford glanced at her watch. Before the Fallen Ketch and its Walkers arrived. Those were equally ruined, reduced to a trio of smoldering, metallic husks at the center of town. But Jasleen was alive, and so were her parents, and her neighbors too, thanks to the Titan who patrolled the region. That Lightbearer, a giant in an iron suit, watched curiously as her father tried in vain to smoke a fire into existence. Her mother stared in silence at the burning ash that used to be their home. Together, they were waiting for the rest of the villagers to return with dinner. Local berries, if they were lucky. “You should come with me, ” the Lightbearer said to the three of them. “Humanity must unite. There is a foundation forming under the Traveler. Let me take you there. ” “We would never make it, ” Jasleen’s father growled, fumbling with his bow drill. “We can’t afford to dream like you can. ” “I would protect you, ” the Titan said. Jasleen’s father ignored him. Her mother, too. “My neighbor says Dregs eat children, ” Jasleen said, to break the silence. “I’ve seen it, ” the Titan replied. “I feel sorry for them. The Dregs. ” The Titan looked down at her for a moment, then swept his gaze across the ruin of their lives. “What is their suffering compared to yours? You lost everything today. And still, it was a good day, as these days go. ” She craned her neck to look up at him. “What do you mean? ” “About what? ” “Why is it a good day? ” “I did not arrive too late to help. I did not die today—” “Do you worry about dying? ” she interrupted. “I worry about not helping. ” “Have you ever lost a fight? ” “More than I can count. I am no Ikora Rey. No Radegast. ” “Who are they? ” “Guardians, like me. ” Jasleen shrugged, her skinny shoulders sharp under her ratty tunic. “That’s okay. You’re my favorite. ” “We remember those who help us. ” “Has anyone ever helped you? ” He nodded. “Yes. Oh, yes. ” “Who? The Speaker? ” He thinks for a moment before replying. “No. A Guardian, like me. Saved me from the Fallen when I was young, when I had lost everyone I was meant to protect. That Guardian is why humanity must go to the Traveler. ” Jasleen furrowed her brow. “What do you mean? ” “That Guardian’s Ghost and Light showed me a vision of humanity’s potential. The land beneath the Traveler becomes a place of safety. I—” The foraging party returned with rabbits. They would eat well tonight. As her mother and father moved to help prepare their dinner, Jasleen undid the bow in her hair and motioned the Guardian to come closer. She wrapped it around the Titan’s gauntlet. “I think that’s going to take a long time, ” she said. “Maybe. ” He stared down at his arm. “On that day, I will bring this with me. ” “What’s your name? ” she asked. “Saint, ” he said. “I’ll remember it. ” ❖❖❖ A woman with gnarled hands and an aged face sat alone on a couch, basking in the dim glow of a Golden Age ruin. She held back a cough as she eyed ancient monitors on the walls and ceiling, which directed visitors to empty offices belonging to people long dead. It was cold, silent, and dark, and the woman felt she should leave. But just outside, through the doors behind her, an acid rainstorm showered the streets of a dead city. She had been traveling for weeks, and today she had eaten the last of the hermetically-sealed food from a vending machine she had found a few miles from here. If she could go back, she would; she had taken all that she could carry, but the machine held plenty more. Life in the Golden Age must have been paradise. Right now she wasn’t hungry, and she felt no fear. It was an odd change of pace—she welcomed the respite. The room stretched on for a hundred meters in front of her, branching into rows and rows of doors that led to who knew where. There was enough space in this building to house a thousand families. For a moment she wished her daughter and her daughter’s daughter were still here with her. They had begun their trip together months ago from Varuna, but she had urged them to go on ahead, giving her share of supplies to them. Supplies were heavy, and she was too slow. There were rumors a human settlement was growing under the Traveler, and the spoken plan was to reunite there. The spoken plan, at least. She rubbed her hands together to ward off the cold. And she coughed. Immediately, something creaked far down the hall. A door slammed open, followed by the sounds of rapid scuffling. She stood up from her couch and slowly backed away, pulling a plasteel shiv from a sheath strapped to her thigh. Five figures with glowing eyes emerged from the gloom and rushed toward her, brandishing weapons. Two ran like men, massive and four-armed, and two were leaner, crawling low to the ground. The last was small, about the size of a human. It loosed a howl no earthborn mouth could make. She hoped her child and grandchild still lived, and held her weapon up in silent salute. The sliding doors behind her opened with a whoosh, and a violet discus cut through the air above her, singing like a sword loosed from its sheath. Three of the creatures dissolved into screaming Void as the disc of Light caromed down the length of the corridor. As the woman turned to look over her shoulder, an iron monster alight with boiling Void energy leapt over her. He moved with a grace that contradicted his size, and caught one of the remaining beasts by the neck as it bounded at him. He reeled back, and bam! The thing went limp as he smashed its skull with the top of his helm. Its companion lunged with a crackling Arc Sword, but he stepped forward and kicked its knee out to bring it down to his height, reeled back, and bam! Bam! Bam! He jackhammered the beast’s winged helm with his own. It fell back, dead. The corridor fell silent. He turned and asked quietly, “Where do you hail from? ” “Patch Run, ” the woman replied. He nodded. “Lin sent me to look for you. ” The woman scoffed and sheathed her weapon. “She was supposed to go to the Traveler. ” “She made it. All the way, ” he replied. “They both did. ” He raised his armored hand, wrapped tight with a purple cloth, and keyed a switch on his helmet. “Jumpship will be here shortly. We’ll get you home. ” “Who gave you that ribbon? ” “An old friend. Probably about your age, now. ” “How long do you people live? ” “We don’t know. ” The woman stared at him, then tore a piece from her lavender-colored sleeve. She stepped forward and tied it to a hinge of his pauldron. “What is this? ” “Your friend is clever. If I leave this with you, I’ll live forever. ” He chuckled. She did not. “Make a mark on this world, ” she said. “Don’t waste the time you have. ” “Yes, ma’am, ” he replied. They were quiet a moment. “None of this bothers you? ” he asked, gesturing at the bodies and the raging storm outside. “Everything bothers me, ” she said, sitting back down on the couch. “What was your name again? ” “Mei. ” “I will remember it. ” They listened to the rain as they waited. ❖❖❖ Three children, two Awoken girls and a Human boy, slept against a rampart on the City wall. They were standing in for their parents, members of the City volunteer militia. They weren’t old enough to carry weapons, but the boy clutched a remote access switch that would alert every guard in the district. He would need to be awake to trigger it, though. So Saint-14 stood watch in their stead. He would leave when his patrol cycle began in the morning. The children woke when the sun broke the horizon. They pretended not to see him, but when one of the girls tore her handkerchief in two and tied one half to the Titan’s pauldron, the other two did the same with scraps of cloth and fabric. He asked for their names, but they weren’t supposed to give their names to strangers, and all parted amicably. ❖❖❖ The Titan leapt atop the smoldering wreckage of a kit-bashed airship, a stripped-down Arcadia Class incapable of escaping orbit, and tore the Golden Age-polymer canopy right off the cockpit. He pulled a startled Awoken from out of the pilot’s cabin as the airship’s remaining engine crackled and roared. With the Awoken in his arms, the Guardian tumbled deftly off the Arcadian airframe and took off at full speed away from the wreckage. The Shock Cannon that tore the ship out of the sky had started an Arc reaction in the engine power cells that would— The shockwave overtook him and tossed him into the air. He rolled to his feet as he landed, dropping the pilot as a dome of Light snapped into being around them. A sleet of debris and shrapnel rolled across the Titan’s Ward of Dawn. As the metal rain faded, so did the Guardian’s Light. The two stood up. The Titan pulled a Daystar SMG2 from a back holster, checked to see if it was loaded, and handed it to the Awoken. “You are lucky. The Fallen shot you down twenty miles from the Traveler. They will not bother you again. Head due south, ” he pointed, and turned to leave. But the pilot tapped his shoulder guard. “Yes? ” The pilot untied a bandana on his arm and held out the strip of plum-colored cloth. “You’re joking. ” “I have nothing else to give, ” the pilot said. “That ship was my life. ” The Titan stared down at the man. “You’ve found a new life. Go to the Traveler. ” “It’s bad luck to not give Saint-14 his due. ” Saint grasped the cloth. “What is your name? ” “Georges, ” the pilot replied. Saint turned back towards the desert. “I will remember it. ” ❖❖❖ Saint stood at the gateway into the Infinite Forest. Six Fronts. Twilight Gap. Boyle Pass. The breaking of the Weapons of Rain. Other Guardians always seemed to remember where and when they found the engrams that revealed the most treasured pieces in their arsenals. The Gjallarhorns and the Dark Age antiquities. He had difficulty with that. But he could name almost every person who had awarded him an accolade over the course of his Guardian career. They covered every nook of his armor. They adorned his ship, the Gray Pigeon. He had never talked about them, and, as he looked up at the yawning translucent field before him, he wished that he had. ❖❖❖ I never found Osiris, but I’ve killed enough Vex to end a war. And they, in turn, struck a fatal blow: they completed a Mind with the sole function to drain the Light from me. It worked very well. Don’t worry. (Not that you worry much). It took them centuries to build, keyed to the unique frequency of my Light. And I sit atop its shattered husk. I mourn that I will never reach the heights you have. To me, you represent everything a Guardian can become. Yours is a thriving City. So different from mine. My whole fourteenth life I fought to make my City yours. I never finished. All I have left is this weapon. The Cryptarchs say you crafted it yourself, built it out of scraps and Light and sheer will, inside the Infinite Forge. I’ll make sure it finds its way back to you. When you gave it to me, I swore I would make it my duty to follow your example. I’m still trying. —Saint-14 ❖❖❖ Panoptes, the Infinite Mind, was dead. And so was Saint-14. Osiris looked down at what remained of his friend. The Infinite Forest shimmered around him. The Vex had built a dais to carry the body of Saint-14. The Titan had been stripped of Light. There was no obvious killing wound on his armor. Perhaps they had repaired it. Sagira ran a beam of Light across the body. “Saint carried these ribbons everywhere, ” she whispered. “He called them his ‘accolades, ’” Osiris replied. “What were they for? ” Osiris was quiet for a long moment. He sat staring at the tomb. “I never asked. ”.

I apologize, but this is really, REALLY extra long. It's been a few months since this story came to its end (? ), and my very first post on Reddit was actually regarding how to deal with this horror story in the making when I thought my party and I could prevent it from getting worse. Well, since I'm writing here now, I suspect you know it really didn't improve. As to why it's taken me so long to actually write it out (besides the length), I've just been processing it in my head. It doesn't include any NSFW stuff nor any hate speech, and considering all I've seen on this sub it's relatively tame, but I guess all of us were just really frustrated with how everything went down. Anyway, enough premise. I joined this group after I asked a friend (call him Tom), who was a DM and telling me stories of his group's exploits, and I was hankering for some tabletop. I had only ever played Fantasy Age (we both used to watch Titansgrave together), so it was my first foray into DnD proper (5e). The group seemed nice, I gelled with them pretty well, but only got in about three sessions before Tom reached the end of his story arc and another player (call him Anthony) had offered to DM his homebrew world in the off-season. I figured why not? I still wanted to play and it would give me an opportunity to try a new class. We spent a few months creating characters, getting them approved, then reading the wiki Anthony was setting up to familiarize ourselves with his world. I even offered to help with editing and setting up pages for use, since it gave me something to do and I could be more familiar with the world if I had to read over what he'd written over and over again. I wanted to be a good player, since I was new and I didn't want to hinder anyone else. The entire while, Anthony was hyping us up with talk of his world and how we'd get to explore some really cool places his previous players hadn't managed to get to, promising freedom of choice and the consequences of our actions. His previous group hadn't quite finished up his campaign, so he'd written an ending himself and was recycling their characters as heroes. Time came for the game. I was playing a human fighter, Tom was a human rogue/warlock, and the other players were as follows: Lisa (tiefling druid), Ben (tiefling sorcerer), Dana (elf ranger), and Erin (elf fighter). We were in a town, things happened, our characters were tossed together and suddenly had the McGuffin of the entire story, all within an hour of sitting at the table. The next few sessions were a lot of lore being dropped on us, level 20 NPCs refusing to take the McGuffin (which, apparently, had the BBEG sealed inside) because they were afraid they would be influenced by him, and us trying to get to know each other's characters and making our own fun. At the end of our sessions we mostly had questions, like why would these level 20 gods think it was a good idea to leave an incredibly influential BBEG who cannot be killed because of a prophecy he had written himself in the hands of a group of level 2 plebs, which included tieflings who were vilified by society? We'd end up getting the BBEG's LENGTHY history as an answer, which did nothing to actually answer our questions, but hey, we weren't coming in expecting Matt Mercer, and we just wanted to have fun. Unfortunately, downtime was few and far in between, and when we did receive it, it was very brief. We would go shopping for items and weapons, then be ambushed. We would try to interact and visit on a ship to deliver the BBEG and suddenly an airship would plunge from the sky towards our vessel. As players, we'd discuss how we couldn't wait to hand off the McGuffin and go exploring, then revisit it when we'd gotten a bit more experience and actually got to know our ragtag group. This is where everything started to take a turn for the worse. We couldn't stay anywhere long because the BBEG's "children" could track their "father" wherever he went, and they were always hunting us. We met two more level 20s who refused to take the box from us, forcing us to keep it longer. If we tossed the box the bad guys would find him and we'd doom the world. We HAD to keep him, despite how the BBEG was creeping into our dreams, and in my character's case, briefly taking control. (I had no issue with that part knowing my backstory, but I didn't like having to be forced to keep the box. ) We tried airing out our concerns with the DM, who promised he was listening and just to be patient. Then we'd get to another city, be attacked by our relentless pursuers, rinse and repeat. We finally managed some sort of respite by escaping to another dimension, little pockets of islands in search of some sort of author who could help us, but one of the children had followed us there, too. The DM had this creature make a sudden bite at Ben's tiefling sorcerer, and would have hit if he hadn't cast Shield in time. The DM didn't want to acknowledge the hit would be a miss and briefly argued with Ben about the casting of Shield, insisting that Ben should have declared he wanted to reaction cast Shield before he even knew what the creature was doing, but Ben argued that would defeat the point of a goddamn reaction. Anthony had to relent because the group agreed with Ben. He had not been holding an action or anything, just making his escape, and the reaction was more than fair. Begrudgingly, the DM accepted the reaction but then retconned his attempted attack at Ben's sorcerer to go for Tom's roguelock. Tom received a nasty bite and the creature was quickly killed. About this time Lisa offered to run a Witcher one-shot, seeing as Erin would often not be available and we'd just cancel the session as is. That way we could at least all get together and play without requiring everyone to be present. I'm a big fan of the Witcher so I was on board and offered to help with any lore aspects she might have trouble with. She had the books so I lent her my guides. Everyone else was more than happy to join, even Anthony and his wife Dana. Made our characters, started playing. Since it was supposed to be a backstory-light semi-campaign (basically we'd only play if someone from our normal group was missing) I rolled on a random table in the back of the homebrew book and, unfortunately, rolled a really good backstory. We had an additional player join us for Witcher, Sarah, and for the sake of how long this already is I won't bother listing what we all played as. Our first Witcher session was pretty good. Lisa had wanted to try DMing again after a bad experience with a previous group. I had little experience DMing myself, but I did my best to help and encourage her, as did Tom. The only DM who did not give advice was Anthony. A few weeks went by, Erin was still bogged down with work on our regular day, so we'd play Lisa's Witcher campaign instead of Anthony's, since he wanted everyone there when we played. Time went on, it became obvious that what started out as a backstory-light series of one-shots to fill the gap had a lot of story potential, and the characters really got on well. Most everyone could slip into character with ease, which made for some great role-play and combat scenarios. My character had even shared some backstory secrets with Dana, as I was hoping to get her more involved and feel included, since it seemed like she was only there because it was something Anthony liked to do. Erin was finally available again so we returned to the main campaign. This new island we escaped to was vast but full of nothing. We discovered that the creature's bite had infected Tom's roguelock with something Anthony described as a poison. Lisa, the tiefling druid, cast a spell to purge poison from Tom's character. Anthony: "The spell fizzles and fails. You get the sense that this is not a poison. " Wait, we all said, what? He'd just called it a poison. Why wouldn't Protection from Poison neutralize the poison? Anthony: "It seems as though this poison isn't exactly a poison. " Is it a poison or not? Anthony: "It's a poisonous curse. " What followed after this exchange was seven or eight REAL. LIFE. HOURS of being forced to solve a puzzle on this island, which the DM proudly admitted to having taken from a game called Myst. The issue was the puzzle seemed to require a lot of visual clues, or at least a good description, but Anthony would give us the bare minimum. He would regularly insist we can't just ASK about an object, we must be specific in our questions (i. e. "I'd like to examine the base of this statue" vs. "I'd like to examine the statue. "). He didn't know how to handle passive perceptions, which the druid had something like a 20 in that category, so he would rely on our rolls, and we rarely rolled high. We'd engage, ask questions, and he'd be aloof and vague. He even admitted he'd calculated we had enough XP to level up but didn't want us to yet as he realized the druid would be able to talk to trees or something and he would HAVE to give us more hints. It was a really shit session. It was the first time I'd ever wished the pain would just end and we could go home. By the end of it most of us were on our phones, stonewalled from every direction. We were angry, especially so when the BBEG in a box chimed in with a hint on how to get off the island he'd never heard of, seen, or even been to before. Tom's character, who had previously asked to examine a paperweight replica statue of an existing telescope we found on the island with a vague question and was encouraged to make it more specific, realized there was a partial solution written on the bottom. Anthony: "Well, you see, I was waiting for you to ask vaguely. " Us: "He did. You told him to be more specific. " Anthony: "But he didn't ask again, so you guys have been here because he gave up on it. " Tom was hurt and furious. The end came, we all just left. I had to convince myself not to buy the Myst game he'd ripped off just to find the damn solution. But we were angry and agreed it hadn't been Tom's fault. The blame did not deserve to be tossed to him. Worse, Tom was forcibly poisoned/cursed and was being used as a plot device. In game, none of our characters really knew or cared about each other. We were just together because, well, reasons. We hadn't been given the time to learn who we were and what our stake in this was, and as a result we became distrustful of some. It felt like a schism was forming in the group of characters, which as players we agreed was natural because we knew nothing about each other. As it happened, the next week Erin, Dana, and Anthony were not available to play, so we went back to Witcher. Where the previous week had been horrible and frustrating, this week's game was phenomenal. We had two hours of intense role-play that we all had loved, and by the end of it Ben's character (thanks to a unanimous decision by the group) was awarded a point into his wisdom for ending the conflict our characters were having with a single sentence. I still look back on that session fondly. The week after, everyone was available again, so we went back to the main campaign. We were still gushing about how great the last Witcher session was. Anthony didn't really allow us to talk about it though and demanded our silence so we could start our game. We understood, and we just wanted to get off this damn island, so we obliged and spent another two hours trying to escape it. He did, however, apologize for the puzzle being "too hard". Erin arrived then, and she and Anthony talked about stuff going on in a different group they were a part of (that the majority of everyone else at the table was part of too, save myself and Tom), and spent the next hour and twenty minutes discussing stuff that wasn't to do with our game. Anthony utterly ignored us when we tried to steer it back to escape. But we weren't allowed to talk about Witcher. About this time I had to leave the province for a funeral and notified everyone I wouldn't be able to attend the games. Anthony suggested, instead of Witcher, the group do board games, but no one wanted to cancel DnD. So, Anthony hosted a board game night on Saturday, while Witcher continued as normal on Sunday. Once the funeral was finished on Saturday, I received a message from both Tom and Lisa: Anthony had, quite boisterously and very publicly, announced how he really hated that Witcher took away from his board game nights. Not DnD, not his campaign. Witcher. (His exact words being, "I don't mean to sound rude, but I just hate how we play Witcher instead of do board games more often. ") Lisa shut down and messaged me, so I assured her it wasn't because of her. He was also talking about how excited he was to use the minis Lisa and I bought together for use in the Witcher for his campaign. You know, the ones he didn't ask permission to use. We were seeing how jealous Anthony was becoming, angry that the rules he put in place to have all players present were slowing his campaign down. The very next day, as I was at the airport, Anthony sent a message out in our group chat we would be continuing with his campaign if we had at least five people (basically everyone minus Erin, who was the biggest offender in not being available). He sent this message out when he was seated at the table at Witcher DnD with most everyone else present there (besides myself and Erin). Lisa messaged me again, angry that he wouldn't just communicate, and then once more to tell me how Anthony had pulled out his campaign notes and was currently working on his campaign. At the table. With everyone mid-combat. At Witcher DnD. I was tired and annoyed. I argued in the chat. He said we couldn't always wait for everyone, which I agreed with, but we were in the middle of a heist in his campaign, deposited out of a portal in the middle of a war-torn city where the BBEG's minions were conquering. I tried to point out that the missing person that he always insisted he required was the reason we were doing Witcher in the first place, so we would still be able to play a game regardless. Anthony: "It's what my previous group did all the time so we're just gonna go ahead. " Lisa was upset, feeling like she was being shut out. There were no complaints about how long the in-between for Anthony's sessions were, only that we didn't want to stay on board the railroad he was forcing us down. And we did try many times to tell him that. So, fine. We went back. We had to sneak through a castle, and for the most part our rolls weren't the greatest. But what do you know? We still managed to successfully sneak out and find the thing that was preventing the use of teleportation magic. We came up with a plan, and when we were within 60 feet or so Lisa cast Dispel Magic on the thing, hoping we could just instantly teleport out and avoid a big fight. She rolled in the mid 20s to do so. Anthony insisted she try again, that the magic was nearly gone. She did again, this time getting the low 20s. The ward remains. " We were forced to fight a battalion of bad guys who KNEW we were coming. I understand not making a check, but this was more. And when Lisa asked, Anthony admitted as much. Anthony: "I just didn't want you guys to get around an encounter I spent weeks on, so I didn't let your rolls defeat the ward. " I was pissed. Lisa was pissed. It quickly became apparent to everyone in the group this wasn't just a railroad, he had predetermined everything we would be doing and when it would be done, and no amount of good or bad rolls would stop it from happening. If any of you guys are familiar with XP to Level 3, I'm reminded of his "How to DM" segment, when he mentions you're creating a COOPERATIVE ADVENTURE. If you're predetermining everything, write a goddamn book. It felt exactly like that, as though he was writing a book and every decision had been made, totally ignoring the purpose of dice and chance and probability. We finally had a chat. By a chat, I mean Dana talked for Anthony while he stood in the background and nodded along, reading off points she'd written on her phone he wanted to address with us. At the forefront, he implemented a new rule: we would play three consecutive games of his campaign without a full roster (namely missing Erin who was often absent) before we could play Lisa's Witcher campaign, since too many missed sessions meant Erin would not know what was going on in the story. Lisa gave Dana and Anthony an out for Witcher in the meantime. Since he didn't seem interested and the two came in a pair, they didn't have to attend the Witcher campaign, and we would host it elsewhere. He insisted he wasn't jealous of our alternate game. We had already played two games in his campaign without Erin. As expected, Erin was absent again for the next session, so all of a sudden Anthony's own rules were again playing against him, and for the next several weeks we played Witcher. Then we received notice that he "didn't have the heart to continue" and got no further explanation. Until months later. He wanted to continue, try again, keep going. We'd spent months making our characters, trying desperately to get into his world. We weren't murderhobos. We rarely refused a quest from the level 20 DMNPC gods who were too busy to pay us any mind except to shove his world's lore down our throats for upwards of an hour. We tried to be good players, and good friends. So we said yes, with a pit in our stomachs and nervousness gripping us, we said yes. We reached a natural break in Witcher so we could focus our efforts on Anthony's game. Erin had opted out so it was just us, at least until Anthony wanted to bring in another person: Sarah, who had been playing our Witcher game. Sarah, who we'd absolutely told about how shit everything was going. Sarah, who told him "maybe" so she wouldn't hurt his feelings by outright telling him "no". So for the next several weeks Anthony made every opportunity he saw her into trying to force her into making a character. She was working the day we were supposed to start and told him several times she would likely not join the first few games because of it. She also wanted to see how things went. If the atmosphere improved she would join, but if not she didn't want to make a character to get attached to and watch the campaign sink immediately. The day before our game (the one which she had said MANY TIMES she would not be part of), Anthony sent us a message regarding Sarah's dietary needs as far as food went. We had to remind Anthony ONCE AGAIN that Sarah would not be joining. Suffice to say that session didn't go well, either. After months of waiting for the druid and sorcerer to speak to their NPC brother, who they hadn't seen in about a decade, Anthony used him as another lore dump encouraging us to save the world. There was very little actual reunion outside of "Oh hi you're here now LET ME TELL YOU WHY YOU NEED TO STAY ON THE RAILROAD". The straw that broke the camel's back was the end of the session. After traveling by ship to a new place we'd been commanded to go, we discovered slavers moving with shackled prisoners. Dana tried to use her animal companion to scout how many there were and received mixed messages. Sometimes there were a dozen slavers, then he'd forget and there'd be seven, but actually it's seven slaves and fifteen slavers. It was a mess. Dana had to point out her ranger ability to him several times and there was a new answer every time. I finally called him out on it. "How many are there? " Anthony: "It's too dark to see. " Me: "Dana's animal companion can see in the dark. She can see through it. How many are there, for real? " I got a glare as a response and he was short with me for the last twenty minutes. He ended the session once we started combat because Lisa didn't bring her battlemap, which, again, Anthony hadn't asked for. Allow me to list off the things we'd lent Anthony without his asking so he could run his game: battlemap, DM screen, all the handbooks and DMG, speakers for music (which I ended up DJing anyway), and the fucking paper. That's all in-game stuff that happened. Out of game, he pouted because Lisa bought a new DM screen for herself with all her Witcher notes attached and didn't lend it to him when he DIDN'T ASK TO BORROW IT; he lied to Tom about obtaining permission from Lisa to use HER battlemap, which she had lent to Tom for his initial campaign, and then LIED to Lisa saying Tom said he could borrow it, which pitted them against each other for a while over a misunderstanding; he refused to listen to us and sometimes changed rules on the fly to suit him; he messaged only Sarah about being in his game and utterly ignored offering a position to another person who had been playing with the group longer but hadn't initially joined because of school obligations, but she had nonetheless been interested; ignored or otherwise insulted Lisa about the Witcher campaign while they were at the events they both attended. The list honestly goes on but this is already such a long post I feel guilty for taking up everyone's time. In the end, Lisa was contacted by Dana outside of the game asking if something was up. Lisa, much like Dana, wrote a list of grievances and with our permission also shared our problems with the campaign we'd long been telling Anthony anyway. Dana got back to her husband and it's been radio silence since, except for about a month or two ago when we heard from Dana he wanted to "talk it out". A week or two to process or otherwise put something together we can understand, but it's been months. It's clear he doesn't really give a shit. In the end, I think he just wanted to try expanding his world. He didn't have the skill to write it out as a book so he chose to use his friends, planning what story beats they'd hit at every moment, retconning and fudging when things didn't go his way. Once I had been appreciative that he'd waived what should have been my character's death because of a drastically uneven fight, but I realized afterward, once he quickly started pushing my fighter's story to the forefront of the group and I was trying so hard to dial it back because I am absolutely not a spotlight hog, he had based a large chunk of his new story on this person, and it would be inconvenient if she'd died on him. Realizing that, I felt like a cheat, like a teacher's pet without ever meaning to be. Months after Lisa and Dana had their chat and Anthony cut us off we declared the campaign officially dead and shared our backstories, and I explained my conflicted feelings about how Anthony treated my character. Thankfully, since it was a bad DM experience, they never held it against me. As of this writing, Anthony still hasn't contacted us for that "talk". We managed to run into Erin and told her why we weren't playing anymore, and learned that she stopped attending so much (citing "work") because she had really hated that session being trapped on that island and then watching Tom take the blame from the DM for it. Everyone but Dana (who is Anthony's wife) disliked what was being done and gave him enough advice, feedback, and chances to have it change. We are now playing an Acquisitions Inc. campaign interchanging with our Witcher one, and it's going wonderfully, so at least it ends on a happy note. I've found a good group and really got to see what a bad DM was. When people say no DnD is better than bad DnD, believe it. It became our goddamn mantra while we were playing Anthony's cursed campaign.
